The Sumateran forest is home to the an abundance of the worlds' greatest biodiversity, with 17 plant genera and 9 mammal species found only in Sumatera, and a total of 201 species of mammals and 580 species of birds identified to date. Native species include the Sumateran Tiger, the Sumateran Elephant, the Sumateran Rhino, and the Malay Tapir.

With a large percentage of its forest concessions located on the island of Sumatera, SMF is fully aware that its forestry operations, from the nurseries to harvesting and the transportation of fiber, have an effect on this unique and invaluable environment. For this reason, SMF is committed to implementing sustainable forest management throughout its operations.

Using ISO 14001 as its management tool, SMF pursues continual improvement in its environmental performance by:
  1. Complying with all applicable environmental legislation and regulations;
  2. Continuously monitoring its environmental performance;
  3. Continuously seeking to improve the efficiency to reduce consumption of resources;
  4. Training and educating all employees to be environmentally aware and to participate in helping to improve SMF's environmental performance;
  5. Ensure preparedness to provide quick and effective response to any emergency situation; and
  6. Encouraging local communities' participation in contributing to their welfare through the Forest Community Development Programs.

As part of its environmental commitment, SMF pays particular attention to: Conservation Management Planning; Reservations and Sanctuaries; Forest Certification Systems; and Fire Prevention and Suppression.
