The Sumateran forest is home to the an abundance of the worlds' greatest biodiversity, with 17 plant genera and 9 mammal species found only in Sumatera, and a total of 201 species of mammals and 580 species of birds identified to date. Native species include the Sumateran Tiger, the Sumateran Elephant, the Sumateran Rhino, and the Malay Tapir. With a large percentage of its forest concessions located on the island of Sumatera, SMF is fully aware that its forestry operations, from the nurseries to harvesting and the transportation of fiber, have an effect on this unique and invaluable environment. For this reason, SMF is committed to implementing sustainable forest management throughout its operations.
