Giam Siak Kecil-Bukit Batu (GSK-BB) forest landscape is one of the largest intact lowland forests in Riau Province which experts recognize as containing areas of high conservation value. The area's rich resources also support the livelihood of the community living around the area. The area contains two government-declared wildlife reserves, the Giam Siak Kecil and Bukit Batu Wildlife Reserves, both are areas of high biodiversity and conservation value.

The GSK-BB area faces various threats including illegal logging, land encroachment, forest fires and wildlife poaching.

In 2006, SMF and APP Indonesia took the initiative to formally propose the GSK-BB landscape to the government to be managed under the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) concept of UNESCO. The proposed Biosphere Reserve Program covers more than 700,000 hectares consisting of the Core area of 178,700 hectares, a Buffer zone of 222,400 hectares and a Transition area of 304,000 hectares. Within the Core area, SMF and its partners contribute 72,200 hectares of licensed production forests for permanent conservation and as an ecological corridor connecting the two wildlife reserves.

The MAB program of UNESCO is a landscape management concept and tool aimed at achieving sustainable development. The landscape is classified into three special functions, i.e., (1) promoting conservation of the ecosystem and biodiversity, (2) promoting sustainable development, (3) supporting research, monitoring, training and education related to conservation and development.

In 2007, scientific studies on biodiversity and socio-economic aspects were conducted by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) with funding from SMF.

The management of the proposed GSK-BB Biosphere Reserve is a multi-stakeholder approach initiated by SMF together with the Ministry of Forestry, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the Local Governments of Siak and Bengkalis Regencies, the provincial government of Riau, and the civil society. An initial Working Group was organized with the Head of The Natural Resources and Conservation Agency (BKSDA) as the Chair, and the representative from SMF as the Vice Chair.

In 2008, this concept was accepted and approved by the National Committee on Man & Biosphere Program for Indonesia. In February 2009, the International Advisory Committee of Man and The Biosphere Program, UNESCO Paris has recommended this site to be approved as a biosphere reserve by International Coordinating Council of the Man and Biosphere Program (MB ICC) which will meet for its 21st session in Korea in May 2009. The Giam Siak Kecil Reserve is also planned to be proposed as one of carbon and the Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) pilot projects in Indonesia.
