The Conservation Value Forest Toolkit (CVFT) is a key tool used by SMF in the implementation of its five-stages planning process. The CVFT is a protocol for the identification, protection and management of forest areas that contain significant environmental and social attributes that should be preserved. The toolkit is used by all of SMF's operating units and by SMF's fiber supplier partners to ensure compliance with national regulations and with the company's conservation requirements. The toolkit has been tested in several of SMF's and its partners' forest management units. Independent third-party assessments on quality and content are used to improve and refine the indicators that identify the presence or absence of conservation values. Pilot reports go through a peer review process and are subjected to public consultation. This enables stakeholders, including customers, to assess the decision-making process for conservation and social responsibility as well as to judge SMF's conservation efforts. This process helps ensure the credibility of the toolkit and screening processes employed by SMF. The SMF CVFT is an innovative and useful tool in planning conservation management as it provides a tested, transparent methodology for selecting forest areas to be protected in the long term. |
